What They Say

Conical Hat Expeditions’ overseas clients  fly in to Johannesburg International Airport in South Africa where they connect for the short (approximately 50 minute) flight to Durban. Clients are met at Durban Airport and are conveyed to Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape where they are met by the vehicles and guides for the trip to the company’s "Ethnic Cottage" at Ebalou, the starting point of our expition. The last four kilometers can only be completed after crossing the Mpande river and this can only be done at low tide.

Trips are restricted to a maximum of 12 driving clients in up to 6 Series 1 Land Rovers. As driving can sometimes be demanding, it is recommended that clients rotate or share driving. Non-driving clients, including children, are most welcome. Groups wishing to share a vehicle can be accommodated in one of the company’s two six-seater station wagons. All vehicles are fitted with simple-to-operate radios for easy vehicle to vehicle communication.

Clients are accompanied by at least two Conical Hat Expeditions’ guides who are experienced off-road drivers and are also knowledgeable about the natural history of the area. The route and itinerary for each trip is planned according to the particular requirements of the group and the driving involved can vary from straightforward gravel-road driving to fairly extreme obstacle-type conditions. Guides are always on hand with advice or assistance if required.
