What They Say

Trips which Conical Hat Expeditions organizes into Lesotho are generally of two types; they are either:

    1. tour-type expeditions or

    2. static or "one-stop".

Tour-type Expeditions

Where sufficient time is available to the visitor, Conical Hat Expeditions recommends a tour through Lesotho. In this way visitors get to see as much as possible of this beautiful and unique African kingdom. Ideally a tour group should spend at least five nights in Lesotho with an additional night either side of the trip to allow for transportation to and from airports.

Apart from the Sani Top Chalet situated at the summit of Sani Pass, there are a number of rustic but comfortable lodges and guest houses along the more frequently-travelled routes used by Conical Hat Expeditions.

The more adventurous-spirited may prefer to camp out on the trail. Camping spots are plentiful because private land ownership in rural Lesotho is the exception rather than the rule and one can usually simply pitch camp wherever the fancy takes one. Courtesy requires only that one obtains permission from the local Chief or Headman.

One-stop Trips

These are generally shorter trips of up to three nights. Limited time militates against travelling too far afield. Instead the group establishes a base and does day excursions from there returning each evening. The base may be one of the lodges or guest houses in Lesotho or it may be a tented camp set up by the party at some suitable location.

A favourite for lodge-type accommodation is the Sani Top Chalet. This boasts the highest pub in Africa at an altitude of 2874 metres (almost 9,500 feet) above sea level. Slightly further afield but still within striking distance of the head of the Pass is Molumong Guest House, another isolated but convivial spot forming part of an historic trading outpost and sheep shearing station.

The camping spots favoured by Conical Hat Expeditions are along the Sani River or one of its many tributaries. This affords fly-anglers in the party an opportunity to fish for the wily rainbow trout which abound in these clear streams.
